HIRING A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR
Many of my clients tell me that one of the scariest decisions that they have ever made was when they decided to hire a Private Investigator. And who could blame them, with all of the things that we see on television? Let me see if I can make this easier for you with four (4) simple rules.
First (1st) of all, ALWAYS hire a licensed Private Investigator. At least you will know that you have hired someone that has had to pass a few checks to be working in this profession. You will also know that if something goes wrong and the Private Investigator does not treat you in an ethical manner, you have some recourse because you can always file a complaint with that Private Investigator's licensing board.
Second (2nd) of all, try to make sure that the Private Investigator you hire is insured. This way, if you do hire a Private Investigator that takes financial advantage of you, you can pursue a civil recourse, and have a good chance of collecting a judgment should you have to sue in civil court.
Third of all (3rd), ask around a little. Call the licensing board that is in charge of licensing the Private Investigator that you are considering hiring, and ask about the Private Investigator. Ask if the Private Investigator has ever had any civil actions initiated against him or her related to their Private Investigation Business, ask if they have a good reputation as a Private Investigator. Normally, the licensing board that governs Private Investigators in it's state or local area will be happy to let you know who you may want to consider more carefully.
Fourth (4th) of all, before you sign a contract with a Private Investigator, be sure that you take the time to have your attorney review the contract to protect your interests. Do not hastily sign a contract with a Private Investigator, hiring an attorney to review the contract may actually save you money.
